What is collage?
“Collage is like a hall of mirrors. Every direction you look, you see something different and visually stimulating”– Nita Leland, Artist.
The concept of collage as a medium began over 2,000 years ago in China and Egypt when paper was first invented. The modern art of collage as we know it today has existed for over a century, and the term was coined by cubist artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
The word collage derives from the French “collér,” which means “to glue”.
Collage describes both the technique and the resulting work of art in which pieces of paper, photographs, fabric, wood, paint, and other materials are arranged and fixed onto a supporting surface. Combining these materials into striking compositions offers a uniquely textured and visceral viewing experience.
“Collage is both a collision and a union, a shattering, and a wholeness all of its own.”– Annie Rowe, Artist
